🔗 Share this article An Tale of Surprising Kindness: The Time a University Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dorm Floor Back in 2006, I made a trip to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. I figured to book accommodation upon arrival, however once I got there, a big convention was in town and all the backpackers hostels and affordable lodging had no vacancies. Hailing from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind perhaps I could just sleep at the terminal – only to discover Canberra airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, does not operate 24 hours. Unsure of what my next move should be and growing worried, I caught a bus into town and started wandering near a gaming venue, believing I could pass the evening in an establishment that was open 24/7. This was not ideal in the best shape to succeed at the admissions interview the following day, but as a student on a tight budget, I couldn’t afford. We could all use more people who show such kindness. It seems I seemed lost since a female student spotted me wandering around downtown and asked if everything was alright. I shared my predicament and immediately she said I could crash on the floor in her student dorm at the local university – a perfect solution, as that’s where my interview was the following day. Generously, she also provided a meal: a leftover stuffed baguettes she brought back her part-time job. This gave me a hot shower and a protected spot and secure for the evening. With hindsight, it’s clear to me the significant risk she undertook being a woman allowing a guy she’d just met crash at her place. At that time I operated under a bubble of male privilege and was oblivious to the potential danger. As a dad now, it astounds me she offered that help – and remain deeply appreciative. I didn’t end up go to ANU, and I never saw her again, but her act remains etched in my mind her amazing act of kindness. I hope the universe has rewarded her generosity many times over. Our society requires more people with such compassion.
