California's Governor Acknowledges He Is Considering a White House Bid in 2028

Gavin Newsom, a well-known member of the Democratic party, has indicated that he will decide on whether to seek the White House in 2028 once the 2026 elections wrap up.

"Absolutely, I couldn't be truthful otherwise," Newsom commented when questioned about seriously considering a campaign for president following the 2026 ballots. "I'd just be lying. And I can't do that."

Newsom's tenure as governor concludes in early 2027, and term limits prevent another run. But, he noted that any decision is a long way off.

"It's up to destiny," he remarked.

Growing Prominence as a Political Adversary

He has come to the forefront as a high-profile critic of the current federal leadership, using his social media accounts and advocating for a proposition that would expand the party's congressional seats in as a counter to Republican redistricting efforts. This action has drawn criticism from adversaries.

Controversy Over Funds

The former president's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, claimed that the governor is indifferent about Californians in a Sunday interview on a major news network. Duffy announced plans to withhold federal funds from California and warned eliminating the authority to grant trucking licenses.

"I'm about to pull $160 million from California," Duffy declared, after a recently reported tragic collision in California involving an non-citizen commercial driver that resulted in three deaths and four injuries.

The governor's team pointed out that the national authorities had reauthorized the worker's status multiple times, which allowed him to receive a commercial driver's license under federal law.

Duffy had earlier announced he was withholding $40 million from California for not enforcing language proficiency rules for commercial drivers.

Firm Rebuttal from the Governor's Office

"One-time television figure, now cabinet member, continues to misunderstand national statutes," Newsom's office retorted in a previous release countering Duffy's threats. "For now, in contrast to this person, we'll stick to the facts: The state's commercial driver's license holders had a accident mortality rate nearly 40% lower than the countrywide rate. Texas – the single state with more commercial holders – has a rate substantially higher than the state. Facts don't lie. This administration is dishonest."

Public Opinion and Political Future

A this month's poll showed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and almost half of voters indicated that the governor ought to campaign for the White House in 2028. In recent years, his approval ratings has risen to an mean of 33.5% from around 30%, while his disapproval has fallen from an mean of over 40% to under 40%.

Some time ago, Newsom commented while visiting several swing states that he had "no clue" about his plans for 2028.

He also referenced his earlier challenges, including being identified as dyslexic at the young age of five.

"The thought that a guy who got 960 on his SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was often seated at the back – the idea that you would even throw that out is, alone, extraordinary," he commented. "No one can say? I'm looking forward to who steps forward in the next election and who rises to the occasion. And that's the question for the American people."
