In a major move for their retooling roster, the American League club have welcomed slugger Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a lucrative contract for the power-hitting player.

Contract Details and Player Perks

The agreement grants a seven-figure signing bonus, payable within 30 days, combined with annual pay of $16 million for the next season and $17 million for the 2027 year.

Notably, Murakami's compensation is subject to escalators based on award achievements in 2026:

• $1 million for being named the league MVP award.
• $500,000 for placing second or third in MVP voting.
• A quarter-million for finishing fourth through 10th.
• $250,000 for winning the top rookie honor.

The agreement includes that he will not be optioned to the minors without his approval and makes him a unrestricted player at the termination of the contract. Further benefits include a club-supplied interpreter and travel costs between the U.S. and Japan.

Posting Fee and Franchise History

As part of the signing, Chicago is obligated to provide a transfer fee of roughly $6.58 million to the Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's Central League. The Japanese club would also receive a additional payment of fifteen percent triggered incentive payments.

Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth player from Japan to play for the South Siders, in the footsteps of reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu once managed Murakami while both were in Japan.
