🔗 Share this article England's Assistant Coach Shares The Philosophy: The England Jersey Should Feel Like a Cape, Not Body Armour. In the past, the England assistant coach was playing for Accrington Stanley. Now, he's dedicated to assist the England manager claim the World Cup trophy next summer. His path from player to coach started as an unpaid coach coaching youngsters. Barry reflects, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and it captivated him. He discovered his calling. Staggering Ascent His advancement is incredible. Commencing in a senior role at Wigan, he developed a standing with creative training and great man-management. His roles at clubs included elite sides, while also serving in international positions across multiple countries. He has worked with legends including top footballers. Today, as part of Team England, it's all-consuming, the “pinnacle” according to him. “Everything starts with a dream … But I’m a believer that passion overcomes challenges. You envision the goal and then you plan: ‘How do we do it, day-by-day, step-by-step?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. It's essential to develop a methodical process enabling us to maximize our opportunities.” Focus on Minutiae Passion, focusing on tiny aspects, defines Barry’s story. Toiling around the clock all the time, he and Tuchel challenge limits. The approach involve mental assessments, a heat-proof game model for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and building a true team. He stresses the national team spirit and rejects terms like “international break”. “It's not time off or a pause,” Barry says. “It was vital to establish a setup that attracts the squad and they're pushed that it’s a breather.” Greedy Coaches He characterizes himself along with the manager as extremely driven. “We aim to control all parts of the match,” he states. “We strive to own the whole ground and that's our focus many of our days on. It’s our job not just to keep up of changes but to beat them and innovate. This is continuous with a mindset of solving issues. And to clarify complicated matters. “We get 50 days with the players before the World Cup finals. We must implement a complex game for a tactical edge and we must clarify it in our 50 days with them. It’s to take it from idea to information to knowledge to execution. “To build a methodology for effective use in the 50 days, we must utilize the whole 500 we’ll have had after our appointment. When the squad is away, we have to build relationships among them. We must dedicate moments in calls with players, we have to see them in stadiums, feel them, touch them. If we limit ourselves to that time, it's impossible.” Final Qualifiers He is getting ready on the last two of World Cup qualifiers – versus Serbia in London and Albania in Tirana. They've already ensured their place at the finals after six consecutive victories with perfect defensive records. But there will be no easing off; on the contrary. Now is the moment to build on the team's style, to gain more impetus. “The manager and I agree that the football philosophy should represent everything that is good of English football,” he comments. “The fitness, the versatility, the strength, the integrity. The England jersey must be difficult to earn yet easy to carry. It should feel like a cape instead of heavy armour. “To make it light, we have to give them a style that allows them to play freely like they do every week, that feels natural and allows them to take the handbrake off. They need to reduce hesitation and more in doing. “There are morale boosts for managers in attack and defense – building from the defense, attacking high up. Yet, in the central zone of the pitch, those 24 metres, we feel the game has become stuck, particularly in the Premier League. Everybody has so much information these days. They understand tactics – mid-blocks, deep blocks. We are focusing to focus on accelerating the game in that central area.” Thirst for Improvement Barry’s hunger to get better is relentless. During his education for his pro license, he had concerns about the presentation, especially as his class contained luminaries such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. So, to build his skill set, he went into difficult settings imaginable to hone his presentations. Including a prison locally, where he coached prisoners during an exercise. He earned his license with top honors, and his dissertation – focusing on set-pieces, in which he examined thousands of throw-ins – was published. Lampard included won over and he hired Barry to his team at Stamford Bridge. When Lampard was sacked, it was telling that the team dismissed nearly all assistants but not Barry. His replacement with the club was Tuchel, within months, they secured European glory. When Tuchel was dismissed, Barry stayed on in the setup. Once Tuchel resurfaced with Bayern, he got Barry out from Chelsea and back alongside him. The Football Association see them as a double act like previous management pairs. “I haven't encountered anyone like him {in terms of personality and methodology|in character and approach|
