Nicolas Sarkozy to Pen Jail Diary Chronicling Two Dozen Days Incarcerated

Nicolas Sarkozy is preparing a book next month called Notes from a Cell, detailing his time spent in jail.

This news came shortly following the former president was released as his appeal proceeds the court ruling related to criminal conspiracy regarding a scheme to acquire political financing linked to the regime of Muammar Gaddafi.

Prison Experience: Inner Thoughts

“Behind bars visibility is limited, and nothing to do,” he writes in one passage, suggesting the account is more about his thoughts while in seclusion as opposed to extensive analysis of the packed and struggling jail system in France.

“Silence escapes me, which is missing in La Santé, where noise is a lot to hear,” he continues. “The racket is alas constant. Yet, similar to barren lands, inner life grows stronger behind bars.”

Release Hearing: Describing the Ordeal

During his plea for freedom, he had appeared by video link from inside the facility, depicting prison life as gruelling. He stated to the judge: “I want to pay tribute the correctional officers, who are exceptionally humane, and who helped make this ordeal tolerable – because it is a nightmare.”

“It never crossed my mind at this stage of life, I would end up incarcerated. It’s an ordeal that has been imposed on me. It’s challenging, I acknowledge, deeply straining. It leaves a mark on any prisoner because it’s gruelling.”

Historical Context

Sarkozy, who led the nation from 2007 to 2012, was the first former head in the European Union and the first postwar leader in the French Republic to serve time in prison.

Before entering jail he declared he would use his time to write a book.

Books in Prison

It is not certain did he manage to review and analyze the texts he had in his cell: a biography of Jesus in two parts plus the novel by Dumas The Count of Monte Cristo, in which a blameless person is sentenced to jail but escapes to take revenge.

Life in Confinement

He was placed in solitary confinement due to safety concerns in a space roughly 100 square feet including private facilities at the correctional facility in the city. Security personnel occupied the next cell.

It was stated that he consumed solely dairy snacks in prison due to concerns meals provided may have been contaminated. Although he had access to cook for himself yet he declined, as per accounts. It is uncertain if the memoir includes meals during incarceration.

Legal Perspective

The legal representative, Christophe Ingrain every day throughout the jail term, told the release hearing he would be safer outside jail compared to inside. “There were menacing messages, heard shouts during nighttime and the urgent intervention next door during an inmate’s self-injury.”

Legal Proceedings

Sarkozy went to prison last month after a Paris court gave him a half-decade term for criminal conspiracy related to a plan to secure campaign funds during his election campaign.

He disputes the charges challenging the decision, and another court case is scheduled for early next year.
