South African Player Jan-Hendrik Wessels Receives Nine-Match Suspension for Genital Grab

The player will be unavailable for the Springboks' upcoming test matches.

Springbok front-rower Wessels faces a suspension of nine games for making contact with Josh Murphy's genitals during the Blue Bulls' United Rugby Championship win over the Irish province.

The incident occurred in the early stages of the narrow victory against Connacht on Friday, with Connacht forward Murphy receiving a temporary dismissal after responding aggressively by striking the South African on the head area.

Following Murphy complained to the match official, the situation was checked by the TMO, who concluded no definitive proof.

Wessels remained on the pitch until he was replaced in the later stages of the match.

Although the URC announced that Murphy's 20-minute red card was overturned by a disciplinary panel, the Springbok was deemed to have breached the code of conduct, which states:

"A player should not engage in actions that is against the spirit of good sportsmanship. This includes grabbing, twisting or compressing the private areas."

Disciplinary officials concluded that the incident reached the red card threshold and warranted a 12-week suspension, the shortest suspension under World Rugby regulations for such an infringement.

However, the player's ban was shortened by three weeks because of his cooperative behavior during the hearing and his good record.

The forward and the Bulls have the right to challenge the decision, but as it stands, the suspension will prevent the young player out of the South African national team's autumn Tests against Japan, France, the Azzurri and the Irish team.

Wessels will also miss the his club's URC games against Warriors, the Emirates Lions and the Sharks, as well as Investec Champions Cup games with Bordeaux and Saints.

Wessels has earned ten international appearances for the Springboks and was part of their tri-nations champion team over the summer.

Murphy, in contrast, is eligible to play against the Irish rivals in this weekend's inter-provincial derby after being exonerated.
