The Lions of Teranga's Rising Star Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Afcon Favourites.

When I enter the room, the young midfielder picks up a soccer ball he clings to until after our chat. It’s a simple visual metaphor for a ambition he has never let slip. “I only wanted football; my mind was set on nothing else,” states the Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His determination and raw talent convinced teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the hardest approval to secure was not a sporting director or coach, but his own father. “He didn’t want me playing soccer simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.

Surmounting Early Hurdles

Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to chase his path in the game. A further barrier was his small stature, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a deal.

Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the institution that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After he earned the MVP in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “astonished” to discover he was without a contract. They moved fast. “I was taken straight to the academy. They prevented me from returning to Casamance,” he recalled.

A Landmark Year and European Arrival

That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, though tired, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his country to victory and being named best player.

Soon after, he was unveiled as FC Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” states the 21-year-old. He has lived by himself in Europe, a choice his relatives support to keep him focused.

Influences and On-Field Identity

Distractions are not really a concern for Camara, who looks up to Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and superb playing qualities. Additionally, he's a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and accuracy from dead-ball situations are notable assets. He admits he must to control his aggression, after being sent off early in his tenures at each French club. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he quips.

Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Goals

With his current club, he cherishes the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” he said.

Currently, attention is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. After defeating England on their soil…,” he says, pointing to a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.

Regarding a future move to the English top flight, he remains committed to Monaco for now. “I am very at ease here,” he affirms. However, he's frequently teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, but is serious about targeting the senior Africa Player of the Year in the future.

“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. Having beaten England at Wembley… it instills confidence.”

Looking ahead, this talented midfielder combines humble beginnings, steely determination, and grand ambitions as he aims to lead Senegal to continental glory and forge his own legendary path in the game.
