The Reze Arc Movie Leads Domestic Cinema Earnings in Debut Weekend

Has Sony achieved another hit? Coming after the box office performance of the hit anime Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which grossed more than $600 million globally, the new movie Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has surpassed the $100M mark internationally, attaining a worldwide gross of $108M in its opening frame. This feature beat out the thriller Black Phone 2 ($12.9M) in its second weekend in theaters, as well as the music documentary Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere starring Jeremy Allen White (nine million dollars).

Notable U.S. and International Earnings

Directed by Tatsuya Yoshihara, the movie is a straightforward follow-up of the initial season of Chainsaw Man. It grossed over $18 million in North America after a powerful five-point-two-million-dollar Saturday earnings and $4.5M Sunday performance. Internationally, the animated by MAPPA film grossed $14.7 million across 46 international territories, resulting in a global sum of over $60 million through Sony distribution (over $43 million abroad, $18.2M in the U.S.). The studio has not yet revealed its final earnings figure.

Parallels to Other Anime Hits

Anime marketing agency White Box Entertainment had earlier commented, drawing parallels between the film’s projected performance to the popular film Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which made thirty-four million dollars in the domestic market in the year 2022 and started with a comparable $18M domestically. This movie's debut weekend aligns with that marker, while its hundred-and-eight-million-dollar worldwide total presently stands slightly below the earlier film's $166.6 million total earnings. Although it’s unlikely Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc will match the earnings seen by smash success the record-breaking Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, this is still a significant success for the studio.

Promotional Campaigns Boost Performance

Along with its affiliate the anime streaming service Crunchyroll have skillfully used audience interaction to propel their dominance at the animated movie market. This film's marketing campaign launched at Anime Expo Los Angeles in July with a discussion featuring MAPPA, special events, and Pochita photo ops, and later included a significant involvement at New York Comic Con showcasing never-before-seen content, lotteries for fans, and additional MAPPA panels. There was even an private showing for enthusiasts for moviegoers and popular figures too after the concluding day of the event.

What’s Next

This year marks a big year for animated films, and for the company, which has an additional feature-length anime debuting in 2025 in the upcoming Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in the month of November.
