For much of the concluding season of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield find themselves trapped inside a mental fortress built from the recollections of Vecna. Their quest for a way out in "Escape from Camazotz" forces them to relive a defining event from Henry's early years—an event that could contain the means to overcome him for good. Editor's Note: This article contains major spoilers for the second part of the final season. A Journey Into the Mine Shaft Upon meeting Max in the world called Camazotz, Holly discovers she is hiding out in a chamber that Henry is terrified of. A clever observation a spyglass taken from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the true terror lies beyond the cave. When she lines up her view through the cap, she and Max tumble into a deep mine shaft. There, they witness a child version of Henry find an man who is hurt and scared. As the boy offers aid, the man fires a gun, striking Henry in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly asks tearfully. It was a factor, but the event wasn't just a fight for life. Like many elements of the final season, the truth about the encounter originates in the theatrical production Stranger Things: The First Shadow. A Naval Mystery and A Spy's Mission This backstory explains the 1943 event, which transported a U.S. Navy ship into a plane known as the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the lone returnee was the captain, who emerged in a vegetative state with an different blood composition. The captain's son, Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this phenomenon in remote Nevada. One of his scientists took experimental components to hand over to the Communist spies, who were desperate to launch their parallel research. This spy in the cavern is that employee. So, What's in the Case? Based on what is understood of the doctor's experiments, the container would assuredly have some of Captain Brenner's infected blood. In the scene, Henry is already bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon opening the case, leading to the development of his psychic abilities—traits he would inadvertently transfer to the kids in Hawkins Lab. Another possibility, the container could have held strange particles that eventually found its way to the secret facility, where it acts to anchor the parallel world. *The First Shadow* reveals that young Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, reappearing hours later fundamentally changed. Throughout the play, he battles the influence of a dark entity, much like how the character Will was possessed by the Mind Flayer in the past. A Weaponized Emotion The reason Henry avoids the cave of that cave shows how deeply scarring the incident was for him. Even as he orchestrates the Hive Mind and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him remains. Fear is his tool, and the narrative points to a final confrontation between Vecna and Will, who has deliberately faced his own deepest fears to become stronger. This journey has effectively disarmed Vecna. Furthermore, Will now knows what the monster's own weakness, and this may grant a key upper hand in the series finale to come.
